HG: Hannah Graham
Hi I’m Hannah Graham, originally from Lincolnshire but currently living in London. Alongside Ben Parker, I’ve been one of your Young Greens Co-Chairs on the Executive Committee (EC) this past year. We’ve both really enjoyed it this year, and that’s why we’re super excited to be putting ourselves forward for re-election!
Over the last year, we’ve been working hard to re-invigorate and re-energise a strong Young Green presence after a difficult General Election in 2017 left member engagement at a low. We’ve launched the Young Greens Candidate Community, a new platform aimed at supporting more Young Greens to be elected into local government; we’ve facilitated a fantastic practical and skills-based 30 Under 30 scheme, already seeing many participants go on to be further involved in the party; and we’ve both enjoyed celebrating the successes of our affiliated groups this year, championing their work and speaking at different events, spreading the Young Green message far and wide. We’ve also worked hard to build bridges with groups and bodies in the main party, the benefits of these relationships becoming clear already as we’ve secured the Young Greens access to support and resources previously untapped. But we’re not done yet.
If we are re-elected as your Young Greens Co-Chairs we will work on three priority areas, to:
Put local organising at the heart of Young Greens activity
Expand candidate support and training
Continue to build strong links with the main party
Putting local organising at the heart of Young Greens activity:
We’d like to host priority-setting events in hotspot locations across England and Wales, open for any member to attend. We want to run these events simultaneously to the same timetable, so across England and Wales members have the chance to work on our aims and vision for the Young Greens together. This will give members and groups real say and input into our work, boosting engagement and serving as an opportunity to learn about event organisation and planning too. Over the year, we want to see events spring up right across Wales and the regions of England and we believe that by getting more members involved in our strategy and planning days, we’ll see these events come to life.
Expanding candidate support and training:
We’re proud of launching the Young Greens Candidate Community this year, but we want to scale things up. If re-elected, we’ll be offering regular training sessions throughout the year, not just at election time, working with the Local Government Association (LGA) and Association of Green Councillors (AGC) to do so. We will support the growth in numbers of Young Green councillors by introducing a mentor scheme with the main party, pairing up experienced Green Councillors with Young Green target-to-win candidates.
Continuing to build strong links with the main party:
We’ve worked hard this year to establish positive relationships with different groups within the Party. We know that by working closely together the Young Greens can not only benefit from the advice and support of others in the party, but can also influence decision making, safeguarding Young Greens interests. This year, we have already begun this work and we’re keen to follow that through to the next, particularly at a time of big change in the party, following the Holistic Review process.
So, if you want to see support for local organising, a focus on training Young Green candidates and efforts to embed Young Greens ideas into the binational structures of the Green Party then please, re-elect Ben and Hannah #1 and #2 as your Young Green Co-Chairs!
